Success Story: IoT Platform for Industrial Energy Efficiency

POMDI improves efficiency with an IoT platform implemented by Unikal Tech Partners and promoted by Madrid's Digital Transformation Cluster

Rising energy prices, new efficiency regulations, and pressure for more sustainable production have made energy one of the most important strategic factors in industrial operations. The IT and OT areas are at a point where they must enable systems capable of connecting data, machines, people, and processes with a precision previously unthinkable.

In this scenario, the IoT Platform emerges as the technological core that allows companies to evolve towards an intelligent operation model: total visibility, automatic detection of inefficiencies, predictive maintenance, and decision making based on real-time data. For an industrial SME like POMDI, this change meant moving from reactive to optimized and strategic energy management.

This project is part of one of the initiatives that the Digital Transformation Cluster and the Madrid Regional Government's Department of Digitalization are promoting to promote cross-cutting technological solutions that connect industry and digitalization.

How POMDI optimized its energy consumption with Unikal Tech Partners, with the support of the Digital Transformation Cluster.

Energy efficiency is no longer an option for industry: it is a competitive advantage. In this success story, Unikal Tech Partners, as specialists in industrial IoT solutions and process digitization, helped POMDI transform its energy management through an intelligent monitoring platform capable of converting data into real operational decisions.

Like many industrial SMEs, POMDI had global data on electricity consumption and photovoltaic production, but no detailed visibility into critical areas such as air conditioning or production processes. Without disaggregated information, optimizing energy was complex and unpredictable.

The challenge: improving energy efficiency using real-world data

POMDI needed an industrial energy monitoring system that would enable it to understand what each area of the factory was consuming and how this affected production and the comfort of the facilities. The objective was clear: to move from reactive management to data-driven energy management, reducing inefficiencies and improving sustainability. To this end, it entrusted Unikal Tech Partners with the role of lead contractor for the project.

The project was driven by the Digital Transformation Cluster and the Regional Ministry of Digitalisation, organisations that promoted the initiative to advance the modernisation of the industrial fabric.

Unikal Tech Partners was awarded the project, whilst POMDI —one of the companies associated with the Cluster— carried out the real-world use case that enabled the platform to be validated.

The solution was developed in collaboration with LIVELLUP, the technology partner responsible for the software base of the IoT platform.

The solution: an IoT platform for industrial energy monitoring

A hybrid IoT architecture was implemented, combining on-site data collection with centralised platform-based analysis. The deployment included:

  • Environmental sensors distributed across different zones to measure temperature, humidity and CO₂
  • Integration of electricity meters covering up to 90% of total consumption
  • Monitoring of air conditioning systems
  • Integration of the photovoltaic installation

All data is consolidated on an IoT platform that enables real-time monitoring, historical analysis and alert generation. This makes it easier to correlate energy consumption with actual operating conditions and to continuously identify opportunities for optimisation.

The system is designed to be secure, scalable and ready to grow with new integrations and industrial processes.

The differential advantages of an IoT platform

From the first weeks, energy monitoring revealed key patterns:

  • After-hours electricity consumption
  • Thermal differences between zones
  • Spaces with improvable ventilation due to CO₂ levels.
  • Consumption peaks associated with equipment cycling
  • Opportunities to synchronize loads with PV production.

Thanks to these data, POMDI was able to adjust air-conditioning schedules, optimize setpoints, and reduce residual consumption. The estimated savings potential is between 15% and 30% of the monitored loads.

Basis for digitalization and sustainability

The IoT platform implemented serves as the basis for the plant's future digitalization. POMDI is already studying the possibility of extending sensorization to other production processes and incorporating automation to dynamically optimize its systems.

The data will also make it possible to measure improvements in energy efficiency and translate them into sustainability and emissions reduction indicators.

This use case also demonstrates how the projects promoted by the Cluster and the Regional Ministry act as a catalyst for industrial SMEs to experiment and adopt advanced technologies without barriers to entry, accelerating their digital maturity.
